En d\u00e9cembre 1999 ce projet fut finalement d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Bien Culturel Patrimoine de l\u2019Humanit\u00e9. Ce centre historique, l\u2019un des exemples les plus caract\u00e9ristiques du type de structure urbaine qui fut d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 en Am\u00e9rique latine pendant le processus de colonisation, maintient intact son trac\u00e9 en forme de quadrillage.
