La Laguna (World Heritage Site)

he historic center of San Cristóbal de La Laguna is one of the three projects that the Spanish Government presented in 1998 to Unesco as candidates for the declaration of World Heritage of Humanity. In December 1999, it was finally declared a World Heritage Cultural Heritage. This historic center, one of the most characteristic examples of a type of urban structure that developed in Latin America during the colonization process, keeps its grid-shaped layout intact. At the end of the 16th century and during the reign of Felipe II is when the engineer Torriani lifts his plan of La Laguna, whose urban structure has about 400 qualified buildings with varying degrees of monumental or environmental protection.
